If you are traveling from somewhere warm to somewhere cold this winter (if you're lucky, that means you are returning from a tropical vacation), you need a coat that can travel with you. It needs to be lightweight, but warm. It needs to be compact enough to fit in your carry-on luggage, because you know how many glares you'll get on the plane when you try to stuff a heavy coat in the overhead bin, taking up space for someone's bag. And ideally, it should have some redeeming travel features to make your trip better.

Here's a rundown of coats that fit the bill this season.

Clothing Arts is dedicated to travel fashion, specifically, engineered pick-pocket-proof adventure wear. The men's coat they offer up this season is called The Cubed Travel Jacket. It weighs in at 1 pound 11 ounces, is waterproof, yet breathable, has a hood, deep exterior hand pockets, and four interior pockets to keep all your stuff snug and safe. It looks like the perfect option for layering up on your trip.

Columbia Sportswear tackles outerwear with proven fabric technology. The women's Mighty Lite Hooded Jacket is lined with Omni-Heat Thermal Reflective fabric that uses the body's own heat for warmth without adding additional bulk. The jacket has an interior security pocket, plus fitted cuffs with thumb holes for extra hand warmth.

For a men's jacket with the same Omni Heat technology, look at the Go To Hooded Jacket. It is water resistant and has an interior security pocket.

And if you are traveling with children this winter, the Youth AirSpace Down Jacket should tuck nicely into any travel bag when not in use.

TravelSmith has long been a leader in offering clothes and gear that get you where you are going in style and with the least amount of packing hassle. If all you need is an outer shell as an extra layer for your winter trip, consider a multi-purpose jacket like this Convertible 4-Way Vest/Jacket. Hood or no hood. Sleeves or no sleeves. The choice is up to you.

Hawke & Company bills itself as a garment innovator and their packable jackets certainly fit that description. These ultra-lightweight jackets are designed to fit inside their own pocket. Don't believe it? There's a video to prove that it really works. The packable line falls under men's outerwear on the website, but the jackets and vests are form-fitting enough to be unisex.

For a more feminine look, The Emma is longer, more tailored, and though it won't fit in its own pocket, is still lightweight enough for easy traveling.
