When traveling abroad, it's often a goal to learn some conversational language tools before arriving. While learning a few key phrases like how to purchase a train ticket or how to greet people are key, some people would like to take their language skills a step further. Sam Nelson of Think Global has these tips for the linguistically inclined traveler, published on Huffington Post.
His first tip: don't give in to impatient native speakers.
Although I arrived with good intentions, I fell prey to the most cliched excuse in the book: "But everyone here speaks such great English," writes Nelson.
His advice: Stick to your guns and don't give in to speaking English.
He also notes that sometimes you bite off more than you can chew, and learning just a few conversational phrases is OK.

One of the most important parts is to enjoy and learn - not necessarily your mastery of the skill. This segues nicely into his next point: learning is fun and tackling a new language, even just in a conversational form, can be a fun way to learn about people and culture.
