Travel Blog of the Day: Southwest Compass
The internet is laden with blogs about travel. You don’t have time to read them all; you are still trying to figure out what dress everyone is talking about, never mind what color it is. This column will allow you to sift through the schlock and get back to your exploration of futility! Check us out on twitter at #travelblogoftheday.
Have you ever gotten somewhere, absolutely fallen in love with the place, and then subsequently upset because you wish you had heard about it ten years earlier? Then you went home and scoured the web to find nothing really in depth on the place you were? Well that is what happened to our bloggers today.
Freelance writer Juliet and ex-screenwriter Lane moved to the New Mexico in 2010 and started exploring the American Southwest shortly thereafter. Finding a lack of detailed online resources about the area, they created Southwest Compass to “fill the void, and to help prevent other budget-conscious travelers from getting lost in the desert.”
They have their site broken up into seven sections, with areas for great drives, natural beauty, a "best of" category, small towns not to be missed, and quick pit stops along the way. They also have a category called B*tch Report, which is by far my favorite part. It is a column about how dog friendly an experience or destination is with a “one to five paws” rating system. It is written with opinions incorporated from Juliet and Lane’s Chiweiner (half Chihuahua - half Dachshund), Bambi.
The best part of this site is that they are hyper-locally focused on the American Southwest. So many blogs try to give you the world, and since there is so much to see, often miss a lot of the little nuances. Juliet and Lane’s take is about taking your time to smell the roses while offering a little bit of inspiration, information, and humor.
They have covered 24,200 miles of roadway in the southwest so it would be tough to find two people who know more about it than them. Give it a read and let them know what you think. And be nice to Bambi, please.
