There is never a bad reason to drink a margarita. With National Margarita Day coming up this Sunday, here are a couple of places where you can get a great Margarita when you are on the road.
Houston
The birthplace of the Margarita (according to one story, anyway; there really is no definitive answer as to where it came from), has many imbibing places to choose from. If you want size, and in Texas it's all about "bigger is better," head out to Pico's Mex Mex.
They have been serving up authentic Mexican cuisine since the '80s and their margaritas are pretty world famous. In 1995 they created the world's biggest Margarita coming in at 3,600 gallons. You can't order one that big in the restaurant, but they do have their Mucho Grande Picorita that is 48oz. of pure bliss.
New York

Rosa Mexicano makes most of the "best of" lists when it comes to their margaritas and with good reason. They are big, reasonably priced and absolutely yummy. They offer up 11 different types of margaritas on their menu as well as Latin-inspired cocktails and sangria. Not sure what kind of tequila you would like in your margarita? No problem, as they have over 75 small-batch tequilas to choose from to satisfy your discerning taste.
Las Vegas

If size is your thing, get to Margaritaville right on the strip next to the Flamingo. They have a bikini-clad woman that slides down into a huge "margarita." She will even occasionally wander the restaurant afterward to pose for pictures.
Although the drinks here are stellar, if you are looking for the best in Vegas, head to Lindo Michoacan, with three locations throughout the valley. They have been voted best margaritas in Vegas multiple times and they have a great tequila selection as well. The best part is you are off the strip, so the prices are much more reasonable and the crowds are less touristy, too.
Almost Anywhere
The Omni brand of hotels encompasses 60 properties across the United States, Mexico and Canada. They have recently gone "back to the basics" by bringing back some classic cocktails and offering new twists on others.
Look for their new margarita menu that showcases multiple margaritas broken down by region and also offers infusions with Mezcal, liqueurs, and of course tequila among the list. They are sure to be satisfying with or without salt.
For those of you who want to bring a little bit of your trip home with you, here is a basic margarita recipe:
Ingredients:
Tequila
Triple Sec or other orange liqueur (I prefer Grand Marnier)
Fresh-Squeezed Lime Juice (anything but Rose's Lime Juice)
Course Ground Salt
Ice
Additional Options:
Lemon Lime Soda
Orange Juice
Sour Mix
Simple Syrup
Directions:
Put a small handful of ice and 2 oz. of tequila in a cocktail shaker. Add 1 oz. of orange liqueur and 1 oz. of lime juice. Shake well for 30 seconds or until you start to see ice form on the outside of the shaker. Strain over ice in a salt-rimmed rocks glass and garnish with a lime.
If you like your margaritas sweeter, add orange juice or simple syrup. To make the drink a little weaker, add 4 oz. of sour mix and a splash of lemon lime soda on the top. For a little stronger drink, float a little Grand Marnier over the top of the glass.
Enjoy!
