For business travelers, a hotel stay is a means to get the job done. For leisure travelers, a hotel stay should complement the trip.

But regardless of whether you're traveling for work or play, there are a handful of simple ways to get the most out of your hotel stay.

Here are five ways to maximize your potential for a great time.

1. Be Kind to the Front Desk

Approaching the front desk with a smile and a positive attitude not only ensures that the hotel staff will take any of your potential problems more seriously, but it also opens up the possibility of a free room upgrade or perk.

Interacting with the staff is also a great way to score helpful restaurant recommendations.

2. Capitalize on the Complimentary Offerings

You shouldn't feel guilty about taking the hotel room shampoo and soap home with you. After all, hotels aren't expecting you to leave a half empty bottle behind and will welcome the idea of you leaving with a mini advertisement.

Find out ahead of time what your hotel supplies its guests with and then capitalize. The result will be additional room in your suitcase and more money in your pocket.

3. Tip Often, Tip Well

You must give in order to receive and tipping an appropriate amount for good service is not only the right thing to do, but an easy way to ensure that you'll be taken care of down the road.

Plus, a little good karma never hurts when you're traveling.

4. Bring Your Bathing Suit

Even if you're traveling in the middle of winter, don't leave home without your bathing suit. Whether taking a dip in the indoor pool or a late night soak in the hot tub, you'll be glad you packed it.

5. Become a Regular

While there's nothing wrong with a little curiosity, if you find yourself visiting the same destination over and over again, find a hotel you like and stick with it. The hotel will appreciate your repeat business and be more likely to reward you for it.
