New England's hotels are a hit with travelers, according to online hotel search website trivago's 2016 Reputation Ranking Index.
The site recently released the results of its 2016 index, revealing the best U.S. cities and states for hotels next year.
The index combines and averages user hotel ratings and reviews from 31 different booking websites, but only takes into account cities with at least 50 hotel properties listed on trivago and with a minimum average of 140 user reviews.
While the destinations aren't necessarily the most popular in America, they are widely acclaimed by travelers.
New Hampshire, Maine and Massachusetts emerged as the top three states, followed by Illinois and Hawaii. With Rhode Island ranking sixth, the New England region boasts four of the top six states.
Colorado, Idaho, North Carolina and Louisiana conclude the top 10 states for 2016, each scoring better than 79.7 percent on the trivago index.
When zoomed in on the city level, Provincetown, Massachusetts, outperformed all others. Located at the very tip of Cape Cod, the town of fewer than 3,000 people was the only to earn higher than 86 percent on the index.
Trailing Provincetown is the Colorado ski resort town of Vail, which earned 85.58 percent on the index. Also representing the western U.S. in the top five for 2016 are Sedona, Arizona and Volcano, Hawaii.
Meanwhile, Cape May, New Jersey; Bar Harbor, Maine; Lahaina, Hawaii; Charleston, South Carolina; Key West, Florida and Naples, Florida round out the top 10 cities for hotels in 2016, each earning 83 percent or better on the index.
Despite missing out on the top 10, Chicago and Washington, D.C. scored highly, placing 11th and 12th, respectively.
Other notable cities to crack the top 50 for 2016 include Boston (21st), Seattle (24th), Philadelphia (29th), Baltimore (35th), Pittsburgh (41st), Denver (42nd), Dallas (46th) and Atlanta (49th).
