Going forward, it's clear that AMResorts plans to hold firm to its position as the fastest-growing resort company in the Caribbean and Mexico, with the news that it will open eight more resorts in the next three years, thereby expanding its portfolio to 45 hotels and 17,087 rooms in Mexico, Costa Rica, Curacao, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, St. Thomas, Panama and Aruba.
In the first quarter of this year alone, AMResorts announced plans for five more resorts, including Secrets Cap Cana Resort & Spa and Dreams Dominicus La Romana in the Dominican Republic; Breathless Riviera Cancun Resort & Spa in Mexico; Secrets Papagayo in Costa Rica; and Zoëtry Isla Di Oro Aruba, marking AMResorts' debut in that destination.
The company's resort portfolio, however, will invariably expand further still, said Alejandro Zozaya, CEO of Apple Leisure Group, AMResorts' parent, during a press conference at Tianguis Turistico in Acapulco.
Going forward, Zozaya said AMResorts' brands would continue to grow within their mainstay markets of Mexico and the Caribbean. "Certainly there's tremendous opportunity to continue to grow in our space, which is beach and sun destinations that are one- to five-hour flights from our main market, the U.S.," he said.
In particular, the company has its sights on Cuba, where Zozaya recently met with the country's minister of the tourism. "There are very interesting opportunities to grow in Cuba in the very short term," he said. "It's going to be a game changer."
Zozaya also revealed that AMResorts is eyeing another emerging market: Haiti.
"It's a wonderful country with tremendous potential," he said.
In still more developments, Zozaya said to expect an announcement on a new property in Jamaica soon.
AMResorts also continues to eye new destinations in its mainstay market of Mexico. "We would like to be here in Acapulco, Manzanillo, Mazatlán and many other places in Mexico," he said.
This year, the company will unveil three resorts in November: Akumal Riviera Maya in Mexico; Secrets Papagayo, the company's second property in Costa Rica; and Breathless Cabo San Lucas Resort & Spa.
In 2016, AMResorts will make its debut in Panama with Dreams Buenaventura. It will also open Secrets Cap Cana Resort & Spa in the Dominican Republic, as well as two properties in Mexico, Breathless Riviera Cancun Resort & Spa and Dreams Playa Mujeres Golf & Spa Resort.
In 2018, the Zoëtry Isla Di Oro in Aruba is set to debut.
An opening date for Dreams Dominicus La Romana has not yet been set.
