Guestroom Groceries Are Coming to Hawthorn Suites

Hotel guests shouldn't have to wonder whether their leftover carryout is still good the morning after.

They won't have to worry if Hawthorn Suites by Wyndham's latest pilot program proves successful.

The Wyndham Hotel Group's extended-stay brand announced this week that it's piloting a grocery delivery service at eight hotels in and around Chicago, Illinois; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Raleigh and Charlotte, North Carolina; Hartford, Connecticut; and Orlando, Florida that brings the ingredients right to guests' hotel room door.

The service is the latest addition to the brand's Hawthorn @ Home in-room cooking program that helps guests capitalize on the fully-equipped, en-suite kitchen and is available through Hawthorn's new partnerships with Instacart and Peapod.

Hawthorn Suites has partnered with retail delivery service Instacart at the Hawthorn Suites by Wyndham Orlando Altamonte Springs in Florida; the Hawthorn Suites by Wyndham Raleigh and the Hawthorn Suites by Wyndham Charlotte in North Carolina.

Meanwhile, guests can order through online grocer Peapod at the Hawthorn Suites by Wyndham Chicago-Schaumburg; the Hawthorn Suites by Wyndham Chicago-Hoffman Estates; the Hawthorn Suites by Wyndham Hartford-Meriden in Connecticut; the Hawthorn Suites by Wyndham Northbrook-Wheeling in Illinois and the Hawthorn Suites by Wyndham Philadelphia Airport.

Guests staying at participating hotels can visit hawthorn.com/homemade to pick out grocery items. There are also more than a dozen recipes guests can choose from that serve anywhere from one to four people and take between five and 30 minutes to prepare.

Dishes include Asian chili burgers, guacamole, scallops with coconut ginger curry and watermelon salad, among others.

"An essential part of helping our guests stick to their regular regimens when they stay with us is delivering the comforts of home, like a homemade meal or their go-to snack. Our grocery delivery pilot makes that possible by giving guests the power of selection combined with the convenience of online shopping and curated dishes," said Hawthorn Suites vice president of brand operations Larry Hambro in a statement.

"More and more people are getting groceries delivered at home - last year, one in 10 Millennials and Gen Xers in the U.S. shopped for groceries online, up almost 10 percent from 2015."

With more Americans choosing to shop for their groceries online and having them delivered to their front door, it's no wonder two-thirds of U.S. adults say being able to cook from their hotel room makes them feel more at home. That same Hawthorn Suites survey found that 84 percent of millennials are in agreement about the correlation between cooking and feeling at home.

Last year, U.S. consumers spent $42 billion on online groceries, up 160 percent from 2015. That figure is expected to reach $100 billion within the next decade.

TripAdvisor is also getting in on the trend, announcing this week that it has teamed up with mobile food-ordering service Grubhub to allow users to order delivery from their favorite restaurants through the popular travel review website.
