For quite a few years now, family travel has rated high on the list of growing types of travel. Just about every sector has been creating products and services to appeal to travelers who hit the road with their families. Airlines, airports, tour operators and cruise lines are all targeting families and so are hotels. The following is just a sample of a few international properties that are making Mom, Pop, Buddy and Sis feel at home this year.
Fiji has always been a strong destination for family travelers in Australia and New Zealand, but Americans are just catching on at what an ideal destination it is for children. Outrigger’s Island Fiji Resort’s five-night all-inclusive family package, the Summer Feast, is designed for two adults and two children with meals and accommodations plus a Sunset Cruise for two adults, and is priced from A$3518 ($2,690) per family. Transfers to and from the island and airfares are extra.
Castaway Island Fiji has 66 beachfront and garden bures, four restaurants and four bars as well as two pools, one for adults which also features a swim-up bar. Activities include water skiing, parasailing, jet skiing, scuba diving, snorkeling excursion, banana boat rides and comprehensive Kids Club and Teens activity programs. The Summer Feast package is valid for stays from Oct. 20 to Dec. 22 and Jan. 24 to March 27 and is on sale until June 30.
Family Time in Rome
Rome’s Bettoja Hotels are luring North American families to the Eternal City this summer with three-night family packages. Those who book a minimum stay of three nights at any of the Bettoja Hotels will receive the best available rate, which is a minimum of 10 percent discount. That includes daily breakfast, taxes, services, free use of gym, morning newspaper and free Wi-Fi. Rates begin at €124 per night in the Atlantico. Rates go down as much as 25 percent in July and August.
The family-owned Bettoja Hotels have three hotels in central Rome: the Mediterraneo, the Atlantico and the Massimo D’Azeglio. Spacious rooms, some of which connect and convert to triples, and in some cases quads, make these hotels ideal for families. All the hotels are centrally located on Via Cavour, within easy walking distance to most sites.
Pushing Baby Through Sydney
Sydney’s QT Hotel, the city’s only Design Hotel, resides in the historic Gowings and State Theatre buildings in the city center. The hotel’s two-night BabyQ package is designed for parents traveling with infants and toddlers. The package uses the new Bugaboo Bee3 urban stroller and an exclusive in-room Milk Baby travel pack from Milk & Co., which includes Bath Time Wash, Shampoozle & Conditioner, Moisturizing Qweam and Anti-Bacterial Wipes, along with Body Oil from Milk by Lindy Klim to make young families feel at home.
The BabyQ Package is designed for two adults and one infant in a QT King Deluxe room and is priced from A$380 per night ($290). It includes use of “Bugaboo Bee3” stroller; the Milk & Co. "Milk Baby" Travel Pack; Milk by Lindy Klim's Body Oil; baby cot and linens in room upon arrival; iiamo self-heating baby bottle with a retail value of A$129 ($99); daily breakfast for two adults and one child (including freshly made baby food); spaQ treatments for two adults; and a complimentary bottle of sparkling wine.
Shangri-La’s Sanya Resort & Spa opened last October as a family-friendly resort with two pools, a 24-hour gym, an outdoor water park, an indoor children’s Adventure Zone and more. Hainan Island prides itself on being China’s answer to Hawaii. The resort recently launched a Drone Experience room package, from RMB 1,040 ($168) plus 15 percent service charge per room, per night.
The package entitles participants to a 60-minute hands-on flight experience with the DJI Phantom 2 Vision+ with an experienced instructor. During the flight, guests can capture 14-megapixel images and record a 1080p video. The footage will be directly recorded to the guest’s mobile device, making it easy to share on social media. The package also comes with buffet breakfast and complimentary access to Adventure Zone, a RMB400 ($64) dining credit, 50 percent discount on CHI spa treatments and complimentary upgrade to the next room category.
