Does swimming, snorkeling and fishing off your own private island seem like the best vacation ever?
Well, now you don't have to break the bank to do it.
Bird Island in Placencia, Belize, is available for rent on Airbnb, and starting rates are just $495 per night. Split between four of your closest friends, a pair of couples or just splurging for yourself, and the island becomes pretty affordable.
The setting is idyllic: Located on a secluded atoll with shallow, crystal-clear waters, guests can spend their days snorkeling, fishing, kayaking or just relaxing and enjoying the isolation that is hard to come by in this day and age.
According to the owners of the property, guests will always have the island to themselves.
"This place is as good as everyone says. It's special. There are secluded places, sure, but there is nothing that compares to being on your own in the middle of the ocean," said Olivia on Airbnb in regards to her stay in June.
Tyler, who also stayed in June, said: "The best snorkeling I've ever experienced. My Wife and I made memories we'll never forget."
Bird Island has all of the comforts of home: There is a main house on one side of the island and a cabana on the other. Stays are currently recommended for four people. However, upgrades available in September of 2017 will render the island suitable for up to six guests with the addition of a new, over-the-water bungalow.
Kayaks that can be used to paddle around the mile-long atoll are provided. There are also float tubes, knee boards and a row boat for fishing. The island has good, reliable Wi-Fi access and a barbecue. It also has a phone along with provided roundtrip transportation to and from the island.

Stays are self-catering, so you will need to stock up on food and drinks before your arrive. The hosts provide detailed information on what you will (and will not) need to stock up on before your arrival. If you want to catch your own fish or snorkel around the island, you should also bring your own gear for that. (Gear can be rented locally before arriving on the island. Diving trips can also be pre-booked.)
There are constant improvements taking place, such as the addition of the other cabana as well as the construction of a true "beach" for 2018.
For obvious reasons, booking Bird Island needs to be thought of well in advance.
The calendar shows that the first available rental isn't until 2018. The host keeps a waiting list for cancellations, but even those are rare. You'll also need to plan on staying a while: Minimum stays are four nights, and the maximum is five.
