While Colibri Boutique Hotels has garnered global raves for its “barefoot chic” luxury, it collection’s five Caribbean properties are actually becoming part of a “small world”.
Running the gamut from family-friendly to adults-only accommodations, Colibri has joined the Small Luxury Hotels of the World (SLH) brand that represents more than 500 exclusive independently owned hotels in 80-plus countries.
“SLH is a growing brand worldwide,” says Brendon Leach, CEO of Colibri Boutique Hotels. “We are honored to be part of this consortium and we are confident that SLH will help us introduce our wonderful boutique hotels to new visitors.”
La Zebra, Mi Amor, El Pez and Mezzanine in Tulum, Mexico, and Yemaya Island Hideaway and Spa on Little Corn Island in Nicaragua each generate its own distinctive vibe. The air-conditioned properties offer concierge service, free WiFi, ceiling fans, organic or luxury bathroom amenities, and unique bar and dining options.
While each SLH property in its vast portfolio has its own personality, all are linked by prime location, personalized service and authenticity to its destination. To become a SLH affiliate, each must commit to a single standard of excellence that guarantees travelers premium levels of luxury, quality and service.
Colibri Boutique Hotels’ five properties are natural fits for the SLH collection since the Colibri brand is designed to deliver uncommon experiences in unique settings. Each hotel is oceanfront, with an emphasis on fresh food that changes with the seasons, exciting mixology menus and wine lists for discerning guests.
The nine-room Mezzanine appeals to adults as a hip alternative to other Tulum properties, while Mi Amor reflects its moniker in an adults-only 17-room hideaway. Set atop Tulum’s Turtle Cove nature sanctuary, the 18-room oceanfront El Pez caters to families with a mix of guestrooms, suites and cabanas. Directly on the beach, family-friendly La Zebra has recently upped its tally to 29 suites.
On the Caribbean side of Nicaragua, Little Corn Island’s Yemaya lures with 16 oceanfront cabañas on a car-free island brimming with Creole culture.

Gourmet Getaway Package
“We have seen a lot of growth in the culinary scene in Tulum over the past few years,” says Leach. “Colibri Boutique Hotels has enjoyed being a part of that. Aside from our stunning locations, beautiful rooms and genuine approach to hospitality, offering top-notch culinary and beverage programs has always been important for us.”
Tulum enthusiasts can savor Colibri Boutique Hotels’ tasteful Noma Mexico partnership via its Gourmet Getaway Package available at all four Tulum properties. Those booking a minimum two-night stay have a chance to receive access for purchasing two tickets for the Noma Mexico Pop Up Restaurant. With limited availability for select dates between April 12-May 28, 2017, the package also covers guest accommodations and daily a la carte breakfast.
As the latest from the Noma Team that has come off similar residencies in Tokyo and Sydney, the Noma Mexico Pop Up will welcome Rene Redzepi as he reunites with his former sous-chef and friend Rosio Sanchez (Hija de Sanchez) to develop an original menu utilizing only local and indigenous Mexican ingredients.
The open-air Noma Mexico will “pop up” outdoors between the jungle canopy and Caribbean Sea just steps from La Zebra. Billowing smoke and the orange glow of flames will define the scene, as all cooking will take place over the fire.
As the Noma Team describes the experience, “It will be wild like the Mexican landscape as we share our interpretation of the tastes from one of the most beautiful countries we’ve come to know.”

For the past six months, Rosio, Rene and a small team have traveled throughout Mexico, from Merida to Ensenada, from Oaxaca to Guadalajara, and everywhere between. Rene notes that their goal was to find that special chili, to understand the seafood, to taste a few of the infinite variations of mole, and to find inspiration in the vast and wonderful culture.
Regarding Colibri’s progressive food and beverage environment, Leach notes that the company is proud of the chef’s table experience and ongoing menus that feature the fare of top chefs like award-winning Paul Bentley and Paco Ruano from Guadalajara. “When you combine this with the attraction of the world-famous Noma joining us to be part of the scene here, it’s incredible!”
