In spite of November's blockbuster merger announcement, 2015 was a banner year for Starwood Hotels & Resorts, with the Stamford, Connecticut-based company reporting record growth.

On Wednesday, Starwood revealed that it closed the year with 220 new signed hotel management and franchise agreements, signalling a 26 percent increase over 2014.

It was the sixth straight year that the company reported more signings than the previous year.

What's more, Starwood said it opened a record 105 hotels over the course of the year, the highest number of openings in its history. Altogether, the openings comprise 22,500 rooms across 30 different countries.

"This was a remarkable year of record-breaking growth for Starwood Hotels & Resorts with the highest number of both signings and organic openings in any single year in the company’s history," Starwood's president of global development Simon Turner said in a statement. "We continued to enjoy balanced growth across both mature and emerging markets and across all of our brands, with a notable increase in the number of conversions. Approximately one-third of our openings in 2015 were conversions."

The success of the mid-market segment drove the company's stellar growth in 2015, accounting for more than 50 percent of the year's signings.

Highlights from 2015's record number of openings included Starwood's 700th hotel in the Americas, 300th hotel in Asia Pacific and 100th Aloft hotel. It's worth noting that the latter experienced a 65 percent increase in signings over the course of 2015.
