The Presidente InterContinental Cozumel Resort & Spa isn't merely the official host hotel for the Nov. 30 Ford Ironman Cozumel - it's also helping athletes staying at the property prepare for the event.

"We offer benefits and special services as part of the rates, which include a private training open swim course, and a free private and secure mechanical area for storing their bikes," said Martha Paredes, director of sales and marketing for the property.

Other perks for athletes are meals and buffets geared toward those who bike, swim and run, transfers to the race for athletes and their families and friends, a 4 a.m. carbohydrate-heavy breakfast on race day, and welcome drink with electrolytes and energy bar.

Following the race, the InterContinental will throw a Mexican Fiesta party on the beach featuring a special "recovery" meal. Athletes can also get their bikes cleaned and packed for a nominal fee.

The InterContinental - and Cozumel - have a lot banking on the race triathlon. "It's very important since the island is positioning itself to offer more annual competitive adventure sports activities," said Paredes. "The guests will get to know us and return for all the sporting events, once they see how we cater to athletes in our meals, services and amenities just for them. Also, Cozumel is trying to host the World Championship in 2015."

Parades said the race, now in its sixth year in Cozumel, has sold out each year. There is currently some space left for both athletes and anyone who wants to watch the race.

While athletes from all over the world will be converging on the InterContinental for the race, Paredes said 80 percent of the property's business typically comes from the U.S. market.

The InterContinental caters to a wide range of travelers. "The hotel is a kind of property that is a fit for families but also honeymooners, people who love water and to swim in the ocean," Paredes said. "It is a tranquil and exclusive hotel."

For golfers, the hotel has a resort putting green and special prices at the Cozumel Country Club. For spa enthusiasts the InterContinental offers such unique treatments as the Mayan temazcal (steam lodge) and vichi shower.
