One of Los Angeles' spookiest hotels, Hotel Cecil, and now known as the Stay on Main is eyeing potential historic-cultural monument status.
According to CBSLA.com, the hotel, which inspired Season 5 of the hit FX television series "American Horror Story," had its application approved in December. This week, the Planning and Land Use Management Committee will meet to decide whether to approve the application and send it to the City Council for a vote.
Built in 1924, the hotel temporarily housed one of America's most infamous serial killers in Richard Ramirez and was the site of the mysterious disappearance and death of Canadian student Elisa Lam in 2013.
During the Great Depression, the 600-room hotel was dubbed "The Suicide" because of multiple suicides that took place there. Some victims poisoned themselves, died from self-inflicted gunshot wounds, cut themselves and even jumped from windows.
While the hotel's eerie history can't be denied, the aforementioned events aren't why officials believe it's deserving of historic-cultural monument status.
According to CBSLA.com, the Cultural Heritage Commission argues that the hotel was a representative example of the American hotel industry back in the early 20th century and says that its designer, Loy L. Smith, was among the most important architects of his era.
