Marriott International, Inc. will not only offer an app compatible with Apple Watch in April, but it will also become the first global hospitality company to accept Apply Pay in the summer.
Marriott appears all aboard with Apple. On Monday at the Apple Watch event in San Francisco, it was announced that Marriott guests at 11 Marriott hotels will be able to check-in, check out and pay with the Apple Watch when the device hits stores on April 24.
On the same day, Marriott announced that it would accept Apple Pay this summer at 11 hotels, including at The Ritz-Carlton New York, Central Park; The Ritz-Carlton Washington D.C.; EDITION Miami; JW Marriott Chicago; Renaissance New York Times Square Hotel; San Francisco Marriott Marquis; San Francisco Airport Marriott Waterfront; New York Marriott Downtown; Courtyard Chicago Downtown/North River; San Jose Marriott; and the dual-branded property Courtyard/Residence Inn Los Angeles L.A. Live.
This summer, guests at the 11 hotels using Apple Pay with an iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus will be able to check in and pay for their stay by simply bringing their smartphone to the front desk, where a contactless electronic reader will confirm payment with a vibration and a beep. No credit card required.
On top of that, Marriott Rewards members who carry the loyalty program’s co-branded credit card can designate it as their primary card on Apple Pay, allowing them to rack up Marriott Rewards points every time they use Apple Pay at thousands of retailers.
“Approximately 75 percent of our guests travel with one or more mobile devices, and it is even higher among 25-35 year olds – a group that will make up a much larger proportion of our guests over the next three years,” said George Corbin, senior vice president, Marriott Digital, via a release. “Millions of customers already use Marriott Mobile to quickly book a hotel, check in, or check out. Now, Apple Pay can make it virtually effortless.”
Marriott has made travel technology a focal point in the last few years. The major hospitality company began launching mobile check-in and checkout on its official smartphone app in 2013. Now, guests can access these services at 4,000 Marriott hotels worldwide. Marriott has also recently been testing an app at select hotels that allows guests to chat in real time with hotel staff to make requests.
Eventually, Marriott Rewards members will be able to check in, receive alerts when their room is ready, and check out using the Apple Watch at 4,000 Marriott hotels across the globe.
