Playacar Palace Melds Frida Kahlo and Innovative Gastronomy

Mexican artist Frida Kahlo has long been revered for her use of bold, vibrant colors in creating self-portraits that depicted both pain and passion. She is also celebrated for her attention to Mexico and indigenous culture.
While you’ll find restaurants across the globe themed around this legendary Mexican painter, Palace Resorts has put a multisensory spin on its daring new eatery bearing the artist’s moniker.
Recently unveiled at Playacar Palace in Playa del Carmen, Frida Kahlo by Alquimia combines inventive cuisine with what the resort describes as an “audiovisual spectacle” sparked by innovative cooking techniques — including use of liquid nitrogen, vacuum coffee makers and low temperature cooking.

The private two-hour event, for up to 10 guests, blends Kahlo’s works with music spanning genres from classical to traditional Mexican, producing a tasteful gastronomical and cultural experience.
After more than a year of extensive research and preparation, Executive Chef Oscar Dominguez debuted the alternative dining adventure with 11 mouthwatering courses inspired by Frida.
“Frida Kahlo by Alquimia is the first of its kind in Mexico to combine audiovisual displays, cutting-edge culinary techniques and inventive cuisine to bring the spirit of one of the world’s most influential icons to life,” said the chef. “We invite guests who are passionate about cuisine to witness this exciting offering. From bite to sight, we promise an experience you won’t forget.”
Dominguez notes that the menu showcases strikingly unexpected flavor contrasts such as fiery chili with honeyed flan and tender venison with sharp orange zest paired with Champagne and mezcal. Palace Resorts guests can accumulate and apply resorts credits toward reservations at Frida Kahlo by Alquimia.
“Palace Resorts continually strives to enhance the guest experiences through awe-inclusive, awe-inducing amenities,” says Gibran Chapur, the company’s executive vice president. “We believe Playacar Palace’s Frida Kahlo by Alquimia is raising the bar in industry standards, and we look forward to delighting our valued guests in Playa del Carmen for years to come.” Chapur adds that Palace Resorts continues to “redefine the notion of what an all-inclusive resort can and should offer.”
The dining experience joins Playacar Palace’s Cafe Del Mar international buffet, Terraza Italian a al carte fare, Mo-Mo-No-Ha-Na Pan-Asian cuisine with sushi bar and teppanyaki tables, Aqua Bar with gourmet pizzas, Cielo Bar and Luna Lounge.
Located on powdery white sands, Playacar Palace features 200 guest rooms and suites — most are decked out with balconies providing expansive views of the Caribbean Sea and Cozumel Island. It’s an especially good fit for travelers into mellow days and vibrant nightlife — accommodations are located just outside Fifth Avenue’s bustling strip of bars, eateries and clubs.
Each of Palace Resorts’ eight oceanfront properties — six of which are near Playa Del Carmen’s Playacar Palace in Cancun, Cozumel and Isla Mujeras — offer all-inclusive nightly entertainment, 24-hour room service, top-shelf liquor and mini bar in guestrooms, unlimited calls to the U.S. and Canada, concierge services, turndown service, complimentary Wi-Fi and signature in-room double whirlpool tubs.
Those staying a minimum of five consecutive nights are privy to a $1,500 Resort Credit that can be redeemed on spa and beauty salon treatments, golf outings, romantic dinners, wedding packages and off-site excursions.
