Shangri-La International Hotel Management Ltd. and Assila Investments signed a Memorandum of Understanding to build Saudi Arabia’s first Shangri-La hotel in Jeddah, the country’s second largest city.

Jeddah is an international air hub, a coastal city on the Red Sea and only 42 miles from Mecca, Islam’s holiest city.

The hotel will have 242 rooms in a 65-story building on Jeddah Corniche Road facing the Red Sea. The building will also house 122 residences.

The property will have three restaurants, a spa and fitness center, a swimming pool, a children’s club, several lounges and a number of function spaces including a three-story grand ballroom.

The hotel is expected to open in early 2018.

“Jeddah is both an important commercial hub and Saudi Arabia’s primary resort city,” said Greg Dogan, president and CEO of Shangri-La. “By partnering with Assila, we will add another exciting and iconic property to our global collection of hotels and resorts and further strengthen our portfolio in the Middle East.”
