Small Luxury Hotels Welcomes Trio of New Properties in Mexico

With 520 boutique properties dotting the globe in 80 countries, Small Luxury Hotels (SLH) has curated a collection of little gems validating that bigger isn’t necessarily better. Of the 1,000-plus hotel applications it receives annually, the group taps an elite five percent for membership.

In September, SLH welcomed a trio of fresh Mexico properties that make traveling to Mexico City and the Yucatan even more appealing.

Tucked between Zona Rosa and Zona Financiera one block from Mexico City’s Paseo de la Reforma, Stara Hamburgo Hotel debuted in January as a contemporary hotel within a 19th century Spanish mansion. With avant-garde furnishings, and touches of marble and granite, most of the 60 guest rooms and suites provide a private balcony unfolding to garden or city views.

Thirty minutes from Mexico City’s Benito Juarez International Airport (MEX), the five-star property also features a library, business center, game room, 24-hour fitness room, room service, concierge, massage room, valet parking and an indoor parking lot. On the dining front are Five S, Luna Bistro and Roof Garden restaurant that each showcase local produce in fare presented for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The latter also offers buffet service and Sunday brunch in an international cuisine style. Nightly rates are from $210.

Situated in the chic Altavista area 11 miles from MEX, sister property Stara San Angel Inn oozes a romantic, artistic feel in a neighborhood of enchanting streets, houses and plazas.

The property’s 22 terrace suites are furnished with flat screens and original artwork in living rooms and bedrooms. Each Italian marble kitchen is equipped with a Nespresso coffee maker, while marble bathrooms are stocked with L’Occitane amenities.

Guests are privy to a 24-hour fitness room, in-room spa service, bistro and Roof Garden Restaurant that features magnificent views of the Desert of the Lions. The property’s primo location also makes it convenient to such significant landmarks as Coyoacan with its “Magic Neighborhoods” designation, Studio Diego Rivera, Ex Convento del Carmen, Plaza San Jacinto, and the famous Saturday Bazar that’s packed with antiques and art pieces. Nightly rates are from $160.

Upon opening in November, the Yucatan’s Chable Spa & Resort will welcome guests to relax within 750 acres of Mayan forest. The property’s 38 stand-alone pool casitas and two expansive villas keep it natural with hammocks, outdoor showers and oversized outdoor living rooms.

Serving as the framework for every casita, the original 19th century walls of the working hacienda will blend modern touches with traditional Maya architecture in an effort to make Chable “a true work of art.”

Built within a cenote, Chable’s holistic spa will pamper with nine treatment rooms, a salt cabin, sauna, steam room and “floatarium.” Naturally, organic nosh will define the culinary scene at the hotel's two restaurants. Foodies can count on savoring seasonal cuisine sourced from the property’s on-site garden. Nightly rates begin at $1,040.
