With modest beginnings in 1965, the founders of Solmar Hotels & Resorts recognized the potential for Cabo San Lucas to evolve from an off-the-radar fishing village into one of the Mexico hospitality industry’s heavy hitters.
When Cabo’s cannery closed, the late Don Luis Bulnes Molleda literally helped to pave the path for the Baja community’s future. He and other Solmar entrepreneurs developed water wells and brought in electricity, as well as assisted with negotiations for building an airport and extending the road from La Paz so it would link to Land’s End.
As Solmar’s collection of Cabo San Lucas resorts rolled out, each was designed to provide family travelers with opportunities to disconnect and reconnect.
Today, Solmar’s all-suite resorts—Solmar Resort, Playa Grande Resort & Grand Spa, The Ridge at Playa Grande and Grand Solmar Land's End Resort & Spa—run the gamut with accommodations to fit every family budget.
1) Multigenerational Travel
Solmar’s spacious, residential-like accommodations add value to family travelers with full kitchens/kitchenettes, private master bedrooms for adults and Murphy beds for children.
Individual resorts also appeal to the younger set with such amenities as a kid’s club, miniature golf and a range of activities that includes indoor yoga, kite making, t-shirt design and clay sculpting.
While offspring play and learn, parents and grandparents can unwind in loungers at an infinity pool—complete with swim-up bar—or be pampered in the collection's award-winning spas.
According to Ricardo Orozco, vice president of operations for Solmar Hotels & Resorts, the goal is to minimize travel stress and maximize family fun: “We recognize that family travel is one of the fastest-growing segments of the tourism industry and are continuously working to optimize our options for all family travel styles."

2) Millennial Families
Millennial have surpassed Baby Boomers as the nation's largest living generation. Seeking more adventurous and authentic experiences, this group is redefining family travel.
Since all resorts feature quick access to downtown Cabo San Lucas and the Cabo San Lucas Marina, those into connecting with their surroundings and exploring have a bevy of options at their doorstep. Among the most popular are snorkeling excursions in the Sea of Cortez, deep sea fishing and whale watching each winter from November through March.
It’s also an easy 45-minute drive to the “Magic Town” of Todos Santos, a national historic district celebrated for its vast cultural contributions.
“Our success with families lies within our understanding that although they travel as a group, each individual looks for something different,” Orozco says. “Our properties have the capability to cater to each family member while maximizing their time together.”

One of the travel industry’s fastest growing trends, voluntourism is a natural for families since it shares community involvement, life-long lessons and collaborative activities. As a tribute to the late Don Luis Bulnes, Solmar Hotels & Resorts has created The Solmar Foundation: A non-profit to benefit Los Cabos’ poverty-stricken seniors, children and women.
The Foundation’s Donations in Action program allows families to assist with food drives and donating gently used clothing and school supplies. They can also take part in the weekly Helping Hands excursion, visiting four organizations that are sponsored by the Foundation.
Guests also have the option of leaving a donation during checkout that will benefit Baja California senior centers, orphanages and shelters.
Families who are short on time but big on compassion can book their Solmar vacation through the KindTraveler partner site—the first hotel booking platform rewarding family vacationers for their donation to an extensive list of charities with exclusive stay rates.
Heading into spring and summer travel months, Solmar Hotels & Resorts has launched an Early Booking Package that offers family travelers up to a 60 percent discount off nightly rates when bookings are made at least 90 days prior to check in. (Travel is valid through Dec. 31, 2018 on available dates.)
This December, the Solmar Group will also bolster its luxury portfolio with the openings of Grand Solmar at Rancho San Lucas Golf & Spa and Grand Solmar The Residences at Rancho San Lucas. Both are being developed within the company’s first Real Estate and Resort venture.
