It's tough to keep a low profile when you're the second-ranked men's tennis player in the world. Nonetheless, one would think a hotel room would be the ideal place to find some privacy, regardless of status—not for tennis star Andy Murray.
In a recent interview, the two-time Wimbledon champion revealed that a curious European hotel maid once bypassed the "Do Not Disturb" sign on his door to wake him up in truly disturbing fashion, touching him while sitting at his bedside.
"At one of the tournaments I played, a maid in the hotel...I had a 'do not disturb' sign on, on the door, and she came in and sat on my bed and started stroking my arm at about 7 in the morning when I was still sleeping," said Murray via ESPN.
Murray called the incident "extreme," but said that it didn't stop there, adding that the maid "turned up at a couple more tournaments in the hotels that I was playing at in Rotterdam and Barcelona."
For perspective, Rotterdam, Netherlands and Barcelona, Spain are separated by more than 900 miles and a flight between the two cities takes more than two hours to complete.
Obviously, famous athletes and celebrities spend lots of time at luxe hotels and resorts and draw significant attention when they do. But Murray's story and the recent robbery of Kim Kardashian at Paris' Hotel de Pourtales highlight the concerns many travelers are fortunate to live without.
"I don't know if that's a fan thing — that's a bit extreme — but that happened," said Murray.
