When The Cape, a Thompson Hotel opened as the brand’s first Mexico property in Cabo San Lucas last June, it turned heads — the accommodation has a vibrant luxury approach that blends the brand’s signature urban aesthetic with a retro, 1960s Southern California-meets Baja vibe.
The 161-room lifestyle luxury resort also wowed professional surfers who have long coveted the Sea of Cortez wave action hitting Monuments Beach below. From May 19-22, The Cape will capitalize on its pristine location above the renowned wave-riding destination by partnering with the pros.
The resort has teamed with new adventure travel production company MANSA VIDA to roll out surfing nirvana in a four-day/three-night retreat infused by the sport, music and art of surf culture. Wave warriors can surf and rub elbows with company co-founder Tim Curran, and his cronies Damien Hobgood and Tom Servais.

Pro surfers Curran and Rob Machado founded MANSA VIDA to provide exclusive “day-in-the-life”-inspired adventures with pro athletes and artists to destinations across the globe. Trips range from surfing the world’s best breaks with pro surfers to capturing photos in Patagonia with the industry’s top photographers — always with the unique selling point that guests will travel right alongside the pros they admire.
Curran notes that he and Machado were inspired to host a retreat while on a surfing trip in Mexico. “We were surfing, playing music, and surrounded by this amazing and talented group of photography and film professionals,” he said. “We want to offer folks the chance to explore surf culture just like the world’s top surfers do. And The Cape, with its surf-inspired vibe and incredible location right on Monuments Beach, is the perfect place to do it.”
A 10-year-plus veteran of the World Championship Tour, Hobgood shot to fame when he landed the highest two-wave grand final score in pro surfing by scoring 19.9 out of 20 (under the current ASP system) at The Quiksilver Pro Fiji in 2004.
Surfing aside, Curran is also an established singer/songwriter who has opened for the Foo Fighters and other high profile musical artists. A contributor to Surfer magazine since the mid-1970s, Servais has amassed what’s praised as one of the most legendary portfolios of dramatic surfing images.

Breaking Down The Cape
With its unveiling last June, Niki Leondakis, CEO of Commune Hotels & Resorts, (the international, multi-brand hotel company that manages Thompson Hotels), noted the Cabo San Lucas property as part of an exciting evolution in the brand’s international expansion. “As our first Thompson resort property, The Cape embodies the brand’s iconic urban edge, while also organically integrating the breathtaking scenery and carefree luxury unique to the Los Cabos destination,” Leondakis said.
The Cape has been carefully designed and positioned to offer unobstructed views of the region’s most famous landmark, The Arch, from virtually any vantage point on property. Posh amenities include a pair of swimming pools (one with a swim-up bar and the other built within an onsite natural rock formation), Cabo San Lucas’ only rooftop lounge, a spa with two private outdoor cabanas, fitness center featuring floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Sea of Cortez, and diverse array of regionally inspired, chef-driven food and beverage destinations.
All one-, two- and three-bedroom suites or villas offer unobstructed ocean views, as well as outdoor terraces — many boasting hanging daybeds for enjoying the picturesque surroundings. Four two-story Penthouse Suites elevate the luxe life with private rooftops and plunge pools.
The resort also nods to its surf status with the premier Surfer Villa — a three-bedroom, two-story luxury suite with state-of-the-art kitchen, gaming room with pool table, sauna, and expansive outdoor patio with plunge pool and barbecue.
The Agent’s Edge
If your clients love the luxury but prefer the Caribbean, Thompson Playa del Carmen has recently opened as the destination’s only hotel with locations on Quinta Avenida and the beach.
An exclusive collection of beachfront rooms and suites all feature private terraces overlooking the sea or pool and cabanas. All are designed with an abundance of natural light and custom-made mid-century contemporary furnishings, beds fitted with custom sateen-woven linens, state-of-the-art rain shower, cotton kimono robes, craft cocktail bar, gourmet mini bar, complimentary Wi-Fi and in-room safe.
