All resorts are always trying to one-up the competition in offering something that is unique to their property.  Standing out from the crowd is great but often short lived in this business where imitation is the highest form of flattery. But what is hot right now and what are some of the new amenities that we might be seeing catching on?  We’re glad you asked.

Hot Right Now

Swim up Suites – Calabash Cove – St. Lucia

Sure, swim up rooms have been around since the late 1990s but they are now no longer just appreciated, they are expected. For those who don’t know, these are rooms that have basically a private pool or private entrance to a pool right off their back porch.

These pools are not normally shared with more than one or two rooms, and are not typically open to the rest of the resorts guests. Some of the finest swim-up rooms you can find are in the Caribbean, and Calabash Cove’s give you the pool, the privacy and the sunset that you have been dreaming of.

Pillow Menus

Pillow menus have been around since 1997 and they have finally gone mainstream. What used to be only for boutique hotels and exclusive resorts are now popping up in Hiltons and other main-label hotel brands. If you haven't had the pleasure of utilizing a pillow menu before, here is the gist: you get a selection of pillows either grouped by what the material contents of the pillow are or by the type of sleeper you are. In almost every hotel this is a free service.

Coming Soon

Mini Fashion Bar - Hotel Banks - Antwerp, Belgium

When you are getting ready to go out on the town, or if you are just settling in to your room, there is always a good time to open up the mini bar and grab a beverage. But what if you have been invited to dinner and you have nothing to wear?  Wouldn’t it be great to have a mini bar for clothes so that you could make the quick change before your meal?

The Mini Fashion Bar is already popping up in Antwerp and will undoubtedly spread soon to boutique hotels across Europe. Clothing and accessories are picked out and ready for you in your room and there is even a catalog so that you can order up additional outfits.

Wine Valet – Sonesta Ocean Point – St. Maarten

Everyone has heard of Butler Service and mini-bars but what about a personally selected wine fridge that actually has a different compartment for each style of wine? At Sonesta Ocean Point in St. Maarten, the butlers contact their guests before they arrive and go over the wine list with them so that they can have five bottles of wine awaiting them in the room in their own private wine valet. Additional bottles of wine can be purchased for a fee.

Dental Butler? – TBD

These days there are butlers for everything. There are butlers who unpack, launder and pack your clothing. Those that will fetch you food, booze and golf clubs if you desire. You can get a butler to bring you a choice of pillows or draw your bath.

Well what’s next? How about a dental butler that comes in and brushes your teeth?  An underwear butler that brings you a variety of unmentionables to try on? What about a butler that delivers your sports equipment right to the court/field?

If you think we're being far-fetched, know that for a short period of time a hotel in Washington D.C. even had a social media butler that would tweet, Facebook and Instagram for you so that you could take a break away from technology. Isn’t that the whole point to vacation in the first place?

Who knows what the next big wave of amenities are going to be. I am just looking forward to the day where I can get someone to sleep and work for me. That is what we need: Work Butlers!
