Las Vegas is renowned for putting on a must-see show.
On August 26, it will host what's poised to be one of the biggest spectacles in sports when boxing legend Floyd Mayweather Jr. squares off with mixed martial arts superstar Conor McGregor at T-Mobile Arena.
With the mega fight expected to draw thousands of additional visitors to the city for the final weekend in August, Vegas hotels have already begun raising prices. According to ESPN, the average nightly rate for a three-night stay in a Las Vegas hotel from Aug. 24-Aug. 27 was just $133 prior to Wednesday's announcement.
Eighteen hours later the average nightly rate ballooned 79 percent to $233.
Within less than 24 hours of the fight announcement rates at Harrah's, the Wynn Las Vegas, New York, New York and Treasure Island climbed anywhere between 60 percent and 76 percent.
Some travelers got lucky by booking their stay prior to the fight announcement.

However, some of those who thought they were quick enough were turned away from great rates.
Louisiana-based radio host James McDaniel told ESPN he booked a two-night stay at the Lucky Dragon Hotel and Casino for $260 total on Hotels.com before receiving an email an hour later that his reservation had been canceled because of a problem with his payment card.
The room price then skyrocketed to $588. "Never had this happen in my eight years of booking hotels for fights in Vegas," McDaniel told ESPN.

Travelers and fight fans will notice the steepest rates on the day before (Aug. 25) and of the fight (Aug. 26). Rates for Aug. 27 will be dramatically lower with a room at the LINQ Hotel & Casino going for just $39.
Room rates for the last weekend in August are likely to continue to climb as demand outruns supply.
As of Friday morning, a quick hotel search on the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority-owned site LasVegas.com revealed dozens of hotels in high demand and many with a limited number of rooms available.
