Weekend Getaways: London’s Agreeable August Accommodation Deals

Although it may seem like the height of the summer tourist season, the month of August is actually one of the best times to visit London. Unlike major cities on the European Mainland, Britain’s marine environment keeps the island relatively temperate, and while many popular attractions in Paris or Rome might shutter in August, London actually has one attraction that’s only open for visitors from late July until the end of September: Buckingham Palace.
With the Pound at historic lows and business travel demand typically softening into August, it’s a good time to visit, and here are several hotel deals to lure travelers across “the Pond.”
Two Nights Reduced, Plus Plenty of Extras
Three of the Irish hotel group’s London properties are offering two-night weekend packages from £525, which includes daily a la carte breakfast, a bottle of champagne and a late breakfast, as well as tax. Each hotel is named after the neighborhood in which it is situated: The Kensington, a posh Victorian residence convenient to royal residences, Hyde Park, and Knightsbridge’s legendary shopping; The Marylebone, a more contemporary design situated conveniently close to fine tailors of Oxford Street and the gracious Regent’s Park; and The Bloomsbury, the art deco vision in Fitzrovia, convenient to the British Museum and the footlights of the West End.
Price Breaks on Park Lane
The 1920s treasure known for years as the Sheraton Park Lane was recently upgraded to Sheraton’s top tier after a top-to-bottom renovation and is now the Sheraton Grand London Park Lane. This summer, they’re offering one free night with a booking of two or three nights, or two free nights with a booking of four nights. For Friday arrivals this weekend, that translates into an average daily rate of £182 (two nights at £273 then one free). The hotel fronts Green Park, just steps from Buckingham Palace and Picadilly Circus.
Quintessentially British Luxury
Another well-located hotel is The Lanesborough, which occupies a Regency-era private residence that was restored in 2015 to reflect the full glory of Georgian Britain. While the standard rate of £590 might be eye-popping, the Best of British Summer Package is available for virtually the same price for many weekend arrival dates and includes a chilled bottle of Champagne, strawberries and cream, daily English breakfast for two via room service or at the airy Anglo-French dining room Celeste, 24-hour butler service, a change of clothing pressed upon arrival, and access to the fitness studio.
Prepaid Savings Plus Discounted Dining
For those with unassailably firm travel plans, Hilton’s Big World Sale includes a number of properties in Europe. While nonrefundable and fully prepaid, these rates are a significant savings and participating properties in Europe also offer a 20 percent discount on food and drink charged to guestroom accounts. The DoubleTree by Hilton London Kensington is offering rates as low as £150 for some Saturday arrivals in August (Fridays are even lower). Museum lovers will delight in this hotel which is located close to the Victoria & Albert Museum, Science Museum and Natural History Museum.
