Weekend Getaways: Teddy Bears on Parade

The holiday season is upon us, and hotels across the country are offering a variety of weekend packages and special menus with holiday themes. Teddy bears are a time-honored holiday gift for children, and this week I’ve found three exquisite hotels around the country that are offering packages and experiences centered on that lovable companion enjoyed by generations of children and adults alike.

Spend the night in the Teddy Bear Suite at the Fairmont Olympic Seattle

The Fairmont Olympic is rife with Seattle traditions. The hotel itself is creeping up on its centennial anniversary, but this year the hotel celebrates an anniversary of another kind: the 20th Anniversary of its annual Teddy Bear Suite. The hotel traditionally takes a suite and outfits it with teddy bears for the public complimentary with donations requested, which benefit Seattle Children’s Hospital. In celebration of the milestone, the hotel is now offering guests the opportunity to book overnight stays in the 1,200-square-foot suite.

Packages start at $1,999 per night and include an overnight stay, complimentary parking, a commemorative 20th Anniversary Teddy Bear, and a Teddy Bear Breakfast. The parlor of the suite is open to the public until 6 p.m., after which guests will have the full run of the suite. The package is available from Nov. 25-Dec. 26, and bookings must be made directly with the hotel’s reservations team.

Take Teddy Bear Tea at the Ritz-Carlton San Francisco

In the City by the Bay, the Ritz-Carlton San Francisco has also been putting on holiday programs with teddy bears as a focal point. The hotel’s annual Teddy Bear Tea is held in the Terrace Room, with hot chocolate, teddy bear-shaped cookies (of course) and assorted sandwiches, with holiday entertainment starring an elf, an animated sidekick, and a giant Teddy Bear. The tea includes a teddy bear gift and a photo with the giant teddy bear to take home. A portion of the proceeds benefits Make-A-Wish in the Bay Area.

The Teddy Bear Tea is held most weekend days between Nov. 26 and Dec. 23, and is $120 per adult and $115 per child inclusive of tax and gratuity. For weekenders visiting from out of town or wanting to combine the tea with a staycation, special winter rates are available from $369 per night.

Up on the rooftop with Santa and teddy bears in the Big Easy

Local residents and visitors to New Orleans can also partake in a Teddy Bear Tea at The Roosevelt New Orleans, a Waldorf Astoria Hotel. It’s one of the many programs including the famous lobby decoration and lighting ceremony and special holiday menus at the hotels, bars and restaurants. The Teddy Bear Tea takes guests on Santa’s journey to the rooftops of New Orleans with Mrs. Claus. The menu includes specialty teas and pastries, as well as sparkling wine and mimosas for the adult revelers.

The Teddy Bear Tea is held from Nov. 27 through Dec. 24, on mostly weekend dates, with some weekdays thrown in closer to Christmas. General seating starts at $48 for children and $68 for teens and adults. For overnight guests, the Best of Waldorf Package adds a $50 credit for a two-night stay.
