Weekend Getaways: Tee Up Some Relaxation

Golfers often head south to keep their game sharp during the winter, and the milder climate at golf resorts in South Carolina and Florida often see shoulder seasons around the holidays. That means there is some great golf to be had at pricing slightly lower than the high season, just as soon as the snow flies in the north.

This week I’ve included some golf packages at a number of acclaimed golf resorts for those whose idea of a great vacation is the sport that was once famously referred to as “a good walk, spoiled.”

Breakfast and Beer in Hilton Head

Palmetto Dunes on South Carolina’s Hilton Head Island has three golf courses designed by some of the sport’s top architects, and the winter season is prime time to enjoy lower rates for golf packages at the resort.

Packages start at $160 per person, per night for a minimum three-night stay, and include accommodations in a two-bedroom villa at Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort, three rounds of golf (including green fees and cart fees) breakfast and beers, two hours of tennis court time per day, complimentary range balls, pro shop & dining discounts, and preferred rates and priority access to resort activities.

The package is available year-round, but the $160 rate is a winter seasonal rate available through February.

Follow the Pros’ footsteps at PGA National

Golf’s top players convene at PGA National Resort & Spa in Palm Beach Gardens every year at the Honda Classic; when they’re not on the course, it’s otherwise open for vacationers. Future golf legends can also enjoy the same luxury accommodations, expansive spa, and selection of fine dining restaurants and lounges that today’s pros do every year.

The Gold Golf Package includes luxury balcony or terrace accommodations, daily breakfast in the Palm Terrace Restaurant, round of golf each day on the Palmer, Fazio, Squire, or Estates courses (the Champion course is available for a surcharge), unlimited range balls and golf bag storage.

It’s shoulder season in Florida, so not the absolute lowest rate, but still lower than the area’s January – April peak, with rates from $279 per person per night through Dec. 31.

Play the PGA Golf Club

The PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie is home to golf courses designed by Pete Dye and Tom Fazio. For longer weekends, play each of The Fantastic Four (Dye, Ryder, Wanamaker at PGA and the nearby St. Lucie Trail Golf Club) courses, as well as three night’s accommodations at Perfect Drive Vacation Rentals. It’s also worth noting that the Dye course has recently been regressed and is updated and ready for play.

Packages start at $516 per person based on four golfers sharing a two-bedroom villa for three nights through Dec. 31.

That’s it for this week – I’ll be back with holiday weekend getaways for weary end-of-year revelers, and some New Year’s Eve packages in the coming weeks.
