Police in India announced Thursday that an American tourist died earlier this week when he fell into a rice paddy and drowned after being chased by local villagers.

According to The Associated Press, the American tourist was 30-year-old Caitanya Holt, and he fell into the swampy rice paddy area following a chase by a mob of villagers who reportedly mistook him as a thief on Tuesday.

Local police removed Holt from the rice paddy using ropes, but he was declared dead upon arrival at a hospital in the eastern state of Goa. Chief Minister of Goa, Laxmikant Parsekar, officially reported Wednesday that the cause of death was drowning.

Authorities from the United States are working with Indian police officers to uncover all of the details surrounding Holt’s death.

Police officer Umesh Gaonkar told local media outlets that villagers grew suspicious of Holt when they saw him stopping strangers and going into homes in a village outside Panaji. The villagers allegedly did not understand his English and mistook him for a thief.

A laptop was recovered along with Holt’s body, according to local police.
