Amtrak Train Derails in Kansas, At Least 29 Injured

On Monday morning, an Amtrak train derailed in southwestern Kansas, sending at least 29 passengers to local hospitals.

According to, Amtrak has confirmed reports that the Southwest Chief 4 train was en route to Chicago from Los Angeles when it derailed approximately 20 miles west of Dodge City, Kansas, in the early morning hours of March 14.

While none of the injuries from the accident were deemed life-threatening, 11 injured passengers were taken to Western Plains Medical Center in Dodge City, and another 10 others were transported to St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City. It’s unclear where the other injured passengers were hospitalized.

At the time of the accident, there were 128 passengers and 14 crew members on board the Southwest Chief 4 train. Authorities reported that five of the nine train cars were discovered on their side after the derailment.

Federal investigators were on the scene to determine the cause of the incident Monday morning.

In regard to the passengers who were uninjured by the crash or treated on the scene, Amtrak released an official comment on its website containing information about how they were handled, saying, “All other passengers were transported to the 4-H Recreation Center in Cimarron, Kansas, and will be provided alternate transportation to their final destination. The Red Cross and other relief agencies are on-site providing assistance to those passengers.”
