A domestic dispute broke out aboard Carnival Triumph while it was docked in Mexico Wednesday, resulting in a federal assault charge for 44-year-old male passenger Joseph Allen, ABC 13 reported.

A statement from Carnival outlined what occurred aboard the ship: "On Wednesday, there was a domestic dispute on board the Carnival Triumph that took place between a 44-year-old male guest and his 14-year-old stepson. The ship's security team intervened and took statements from all parties.

All appropriate officials were notified and Carnival is working with law enforcement authorities as the investigation continues. The 44-year-old guest has been confined to his cabin for the remainder of the cruise.

The 14-year-old was evaluated by the ship's medical team who recommended that the minor guest should disembark the vessel in Cozumel for further medical treatment. The guest, accompanied by his mother, was evaluated by a shoreside physician in Cozumel and members of Carnival's CareTeam are providing support and assistance to the minor guest and his mother.

The safety and security of our guests and crew is of utmost importance and we will not tolerate behavior that could put any of them at risk."

The FBI, taking on the case because it has special jurisdiction for such incidences, cannot comment because federal charges are pending, but KPRC 2 News reported that the altercation happened in a hallway aboard the ship, and the boy’s mother said Allen had been drinking. Witnesses allegedly saw Allen with his hand around his stepson’s neck, KPRC said. Reviewing court documents, the station found out that the 14-year-old had a broken front tooth, a swollen face, and a "large stain of what appeared to be blood," as the documents say.

Allen told ship security that he felt disrespected by his boys. “They came at me and I was not going to let that be the end... I want my money back now," security said he told them. When the ship docked in Galveston Saturday, Allen was taken into custody.
