On Friday, a fire broke out in a utility closet at Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport in Alabama which knocked out power and caused several flight delays.
According to The Associated Press, Birmingham airport spokeswoman Toni Herrera-Bast said the fire occurred before dawn Friday inside the facility’s secured area, but it did not impact security screening or Transportation Security Administration operations.
The fire caused a power outage on one side of the Shuttlesworth International Airport terminal, which resulted in delays for a total of nine flights operated by Delta Air Lines and American Airlines.
The power outage caused problems with passenger processing and contributed to the delays.
Airport officials revealed that no one was hurt during the fire or subsequent power outage, and power had been restored to the facility by mid-morning. Authorities believe an electrical problem caused the fire, but the investigation is ongoing and the exact cause hasn't been determined.
