During a recent recruitment event in the eastern Chinese province of Shandong, around 1,000 candidates — all female high school graduates — appeared onstage in brief swimwear, in the hopes of landing either an air hostess or modeling job, reported, via the People’s Daily Online. And this has raised the ire of the largest flight attendant union in the world.

The event, which took place in the city of Qingdao, was organized by modeling agency Oriental Beauty, to assist airline recruiters in finding “talent,” as put it.

Citing Oriental Beauty’s website, The Daily Mail said hopefuls had to be at least five foot six in height, but the exceptionally beautiful could be five foot five. The women had to be “elegant, slim, have sweet voice and have no scars in the exposed part of their skin.”

Candidates did also appear in flight attendant-style uniforms in another segment of the show, as seen in photos of the event.

The Association of Flight Attendants, CWA (AFA) International, the largest flight attendant union on Earth, is not happy about this display of flesh.

Union president Sara Nelson said in a recent statement, "We condemn those responsible for this,” and declared that it was a “publicity stunt at the expense of women everywhere.”

Nelson emphasized how gender bias doesn’t stop at national borders, stating, "If discrimination exists anywhere, it is a threat to women everywhere. This is not a fight just for the women of China. In this era of increased globalization and trade agreements that pit American workers against these abhorrent labor practices, our union understands this very real threat to flight attendants in the U.S. and around the world.”
