Ill Pilot Causes Plane to Turn Around

An American Airlines flight scheduled from Phoenix to Baltimore on Sunday was forced to turn back to Sky Harbor International Airport after the captain fell ill, the airline confirmed to NBC News.

"While en route to Baltimore, the captain of American Airlines Flight 618 felt ill and returned back to Phoenix out of precaution," an American Airlines spokesperson told NBC News. "The aircraft landed without incident."

Although the flight was already 40 minutes in while heading east to Baltimore, apparently the pilot felt sick enough that he did not think he could make it another four hours to the destination and instead asked for permission to turn around and head back to Phoenix.

Flight 618, which had 85 passengers on board, landed back at Sky Harbor almost an hour and 20 minutes after it had taken off at 4:16 p.m. MT. It landed at 5:38 p.m. and, after another pilot was located, took off again without incident at 8:55 p.m.
