A 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck Indonesia'sLombok island, killing at least three according to local authorities.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey the quake's epicenter was 1.4 kilometers (0.8 miles) southwest of Lelongken, Indonesia. It had a depth of 7 kilometers (4.4 miles) and was followed by an aftershock of magnitude 5.4.
The quake hit at 6:47a.m. local time, with many still sleeping.
Authorities have confirmed at least three dead at this time with reports of damage to buildings.
The island, which is not far from Bali, is a tourist destination in its own right and known for its pristine beaches, wonderful surfing, and the Gili Islands. Most damage due to the quake was to the northern and eastern sides of the island, which are tourist areas.
Mount Rinjani National Park, another popular destination, is closed due to the potential of landslides.
