A man has died after falling eight stories down an elevator shaft at the iconic New York Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York City.
Identified as 28-year old Joseph Seminara of Pennsylvania, the man had been staying at the hotel with his parents. After checking out, while they were waiting for the elevators on the eighth floor, which is the hotel's lobby level, the man stepped over the elevator barrier, according to the New York Post.

He then fell eight stories, to the hotel's basement, where he was pronounced dead. According to Post sources, he was said to have been suffering from depression.
The incident occurred just after 3 p.m. last Thursday, just as the hotel was hosting the annual induction ceremony for the Songwriter's Hall of Fame. Numerous celebrities were attending the event, which honored Jay-Z, the first rapper to be inducted into the association.

The 48-story Marriott Marquis enjoys a coveted setting in the heart of Times Square. It is a popular visitor draw, not just because of its location, but also because of its atrium-style lobby and the glass elevators which soar up to "The View," New York's only revolving restaurant.
