Love is a powerful thing. Just look at how it’s been portrayed in music.

Part-Time Lover. Justify My Love. The Greatest Love of All.

Love Will Keep Us Together.

And so on, and so on.

But, as The J. Geils Band once sang, love can also stink.

Alexander Pieter Cirk knows what that means.

A Dutchman, Cirk flew to China last month, ostensibly to meet his online girlfriend of two months. He ended up being hospitalized for fatigue and malnutrition after waiting at the airport for 10 days for the woman, who never showed.

The story has been chronicled from the Netherlands to Asia after pictures surfaced online showing Cirk waiting in the airport. Later, pictures of him being wheeled out of the airport in a wheelchair with an IV drip were also published.

The woman, who has only been identified as Zhang by the Chinese press, told China’s CCTV News that she thought it all was a joke. “We had advanced our romantic relationship but later he seemed a little callous toward me,” Zhang said. “One day he sent me a photo of air tickets abruptly and I thought it was a joke. He didn’t contact me later.”

That seems a little hard to believe given that Cirk was willing to sit in the Changsha Huanghua International Airport for 10 full days before the laws of human physiology caught up with him due to a lack of proper food and sleep. Not to mention hygiene.

Cirk, 41, was briefly hospitalized before flying back to the Netherlands.

The story did not have a happy ending, but at least it has the potential for one – Zhang said she still hopes to meet with Cirk going forward.
