On Sunday, a male passenger fell ill during a Kuwait Airways flight to New York City and died in Ireland during a scheduled stop.
According to the Clare Herald, Kuwait Airways Flight KU-117 was traveling from Kuwait City to New York City when a 62-year-old passenger became ill. The man was traveling under medical supervision with his family when the incident occurred.
The plane was already scheduled to make its daily technical stop at Shannon Airport in Ireland before the emergency occurred, and the Boeing 777-300 landed safely at 1:57 a.m. local time.
Upon landing, the man suffering from a medical emergency was met by airport authorities and National Ambulance Service paramedics. The passenger was rushed to University Hospital Limerick, but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Flight KU-117 was delayed two hours due to the incident, but it resumed its journey Sunday night at 6 p.m. local time. A postmortem examination on the deceased man was scheduled for Monday.
Over the recent holiday travel period, Shannon Airport experienced five unscheduled landings. Of those, four were for medical emergencies, including a 10-year-old girl who died during a flight from Toronto to London on Christmas Eve.
