Beachgoers at Hawaii’s popular Hanauma Bay were greeted with an unwelcome surprise Saturday morning after the beach was evacuated due to the discovery of an unidentified item believed to be an explosive device.
While undergoing a routine safety training, a lifeguard saw the canister-shaped item in the water near the “Witches Brew” area. Suspecting the item could be a potential bomb, he brought it to the beach and then initiated an evacuation of the area.
He then called the fire department and police. The bomb squad has responded and the beach remains closed as the bomb squad investigates.
This is a developing story and will be updated as it develops.
