In January, rock and roll legend Rick Derringer was reportedly arrested at an Atlanta airport for carrying a loaded gun in his carry-on luggage.
According to The Associated Press, the 69-year-old Derringer was stopped by security after his Delta Air Lines flight had landed at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport following a journey from Cancun, Mexico.
A federal air marshal handling the situation said in court records that Derringer told him that "he flies as many as 50 times per year with the gun in his carry-on bag, and has never had a problem."
In the formal criminal complaint, Derringer reportedly claimed he thought he could bring the gun on the plane with him since he had a Florida pistol permit. As a result of the arrest, the rock star was charged with unlawfully entering an airport's secure area with a weapon.
The incident occurred on Jan. 9, and all efforts to reach Derringer's representatives went unanswered. In addition, a Transportation Security Administration spokesman had no immediate comment.
Derringer is best known for his 1965 hit song "Hang on Sloopy" and the 1974 single "Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo." Derringer also worked with the WWF in the 1980s, where he developed the theme songs for Hulk Hogan and the tag team Demolition.
