After an erratically acting man entered a secure hallway and gave chase to authorities at Newark Liberty International Airport’s Terminal C Sunday night, a partial evacuation took place, the Associated Press reported.
The incident occurred around 7 p.m., Port Authority Police Department spokesperson Joe Pentangelo told the AP.
According to Pentangelo, the man accessed the hallway via an exit door, where Customs and Border Protection agents confronted him.
Witness Joe Manzelli said to the AP he was waiting for his wife close to a security checkpoint when he heard someone yell, "stop!" and then he spotted a man running into the terminal.
Manzelli saw a number of bags dropped in the exit and then a mass of police officers arriving in the terminal. Five minutes after this, authorities began to evacuate the area, he told the AP.
Flier Rich Krezwick tweeted that he tripped the suspect with his briefcase, which allowed the man to be apprehended.
Manzelli said to the AP he saw the man responsible for the security breach escorted back to the screening area, where he was "just rambling about being afraid of being shot and money."
Pentangelo said to the AP that part of the airport was cleared while officers with police dogs did a security sweep.
CBS News New York reported that the terminal reopened around 8:30 p.m.
