Severe Turbulence on Etihad Airways Flight Injures 32 People
On Wednesday, an Etihad Airways flight encountered severe turbulence as it prepared to land in Indonesia, injuring 31 passengers and a member of the flight crew.
According to The Associated Press, Etihad Airways Flight EY474 was en route from Abu Dhabi to Jakarta, Indonesia, when the Airbus A330-200 was hit with severe and unexpected turbulence just 45 minutes before landing at Soekarno Hatta International Airport.
Following the turbulence, the Etihad Airways flight was able to land safely, but nine passengers and a crew member had to be taken to a local hospital to be treated for their injuries. The airline released a statement saying that the other 22 passengers injured were treated at the clinic in the Soekarno Hatta International Airport and released a short time later.
Airport officials described nine of the injuries as serious—with several passengers reportedly suffering broken bones—and that the turbulence was severe enough to damage cabin storage bins.
Indonesia's National Transportation Safety Committee and airport officials announced they were inspecting the plane for damage. The airline’s scheduled flight from Jakarta to Abu Dhabi Wednesday was canceled while the aircraft was repaired, and Etihad Airways is assisting passengers left stranded by the cancelation.
