Severe weather striking the mid-part of the country is creating some Mother’s Day travel hiccups for Dallas/Fort Worth-area airports.
These severe thunderstorms are “capable of producing tornadoes, large hail and damaging wind gusts,” according to Weather.com. They also said flooding rainfall is a “huge concern” in the region including northern Texas.
Just this morning, intense thunderstorms descended upon the Dallas/Forth Worth metro area, bringing torrential downpours and gusty winds. With reports of tornadoes touching down and causing damage in South Dakota, and severe weather spanning the region from north to south, a tornado watch is in effect until 9 p.m. CDT in an area that includes Dallas/Fort Worth.
Denton County, just north of Dallas/Fort Worth, is under a tornado warning, and tweets from the local National Weather Service are urging residents of the Denton towns of Krugerville and Aubrey to take cover in tornado shelters due to funnel clouds being spotted.
What does this mean for travelers? Delays and cancellations aplenty.
Flightaware.com is reporting for Dallas/Fort Worth International over 400 canceled and almost 270 delayed outbound flights, and almost 430 canceled and 170 delayed inbound flights. Meanwhile, Dallas Love Field’s inbound flights are being affected, with 13 cancellations and 57 delays.
Both airports are also tweeting about the delays as a heads-up to travelers. Contact your carrier for up-to-the-minute information before heading to the airport.
