Spain-Bound Ryanair Flight Returns to Airport to Remove Forgotten Luggage

There are all sorts of reasons for flight delays, but leftover luggage is rarely to blame.

Nonetheless Irish low-cost carrier Ryanair and Northern Ireland's City of Derry Airport have both issued apologies to passengers following a bizarre delay on an Alicante, Spain-bound flight Monday.

The Irish Examiner reported the flight was forced to turn around just 20 minutes after takeoff when it was discovered that ground handling agents hadn't removed all of the luggage from a previous flight from the aircraft.

The pilot confirmed the change of course to passengers before returning to City of Derry Airport.

A spokesperson for Ryanair, which apologized to customers for the unexpected delay, told the Examiner that "the aircraft landed normally, the baggage was removed and the flight departed to Alicante."

The flight departed for a second and final time around 7 p.m. local time Monday.

In a statement, the Ryanair spokesperson pinned the mishap on a "third party agent."

"This flight from Derry to Alicante (27 July) returned to Derry shortly after take-off to unload baggage from the previous flight, which the third party ground handling agent had failed to remove before take-off," said the airline's spokesperson via the Examiner.

Meanwhile, a spokeswoman for City of Derry Airport apologized for the inconvenience to passengers and told the Examiner that an investigation into the incident is currently underway.
