An American tourist made a shocking discovery on a beach in Ireland's County Mayo when he stumbled upon a package containing more than $56,000 worth of cocaine.
According to the Irish Times, Tommy Schlather was relaxing near the Minaun Cliffs last Thursday on Ireland's scenic Achill Island when he noticed an object that didn't quite fit in had washed ashore.
"I was walking on the beach and was sitting on the rocks when I noticed the item. It was maybe the size of an old cassette tape and covered in black and yellow tape," Schlather told the Times. "I wasn't sure what it was at first but when I had a closer look I had a fair idea."
Schlather told relatives he was visiting about his discovery. They alerted authorities who seized the drugs.
The package contained about one kilogram of cocaine with an estimated street value of €50,000 or $56,000, according to Irish police.
Authorities searched the beach for more packages but found nothing. It's believed the package was part of a much larger shipment that fell into the sea while being smuggled along Ireland's West Coast.

Despite the amount and value, the package might not even be the weirdest item to wash ashore lately. According to Irish Central, a five millennia old axe used for hunting was found in Galway back in 2014.
What's more, last week's eye-popping discovery comes just one month after Achill Island's Dooagh Beach reappeared for the first time in 33 years. The 300-meter stretch of sand had been washed away by a storm in the 1980s, leaving only rocks.
