On Wednesday, three separate incidents of unattended bags resulted in the evacuation of passengers in three terminals at Los Angeles International Airport.
According to the Los Angeles Times, the first bag was discovered in the transfer area Terminal 6 around 9:30 a.m. local time, and officials evacuated the area while bomb-sniffing dogs checked out the luggage. The investigation found the suspicion was unfounded.
The second incident involved an unattended bag near a pedestrian bridge by Terminal 7, which resulted in another evacuation. After police searched the area and determined there was no danger, passengers were let back into the terminal 15 minutes later.
As the Los Angeles Police Department bomb squad was en route to Terminal 7, yet another unattended bag-this time in the men's bathroom in Terminal 5-was reported to police. Authorities cleared passengers from the terminal and Gate 52 for safety reasons.
LAX spokeswoman Mary Grady said police had cleared the area and Terminal 5 was back in full operation a short time later.
Unfortunately for officials at LAX, the bomb scares couldn't have come at a worse time. The holiday travel season is the airport's busiest period, with an estimated 239,000 passengers flying out of the facility on Wednesday alone.
