A captain aboard a United Airlines flight is in hot water after throwing bullets into a trash bin aboard a flight and eventually flushing them down the toilet.
The United Airlines captain was en route to Germany from Houston on June 23 when he realized that he had left bullets in his carry-on bag. He was permitted to carry a weapon on flights in the United States, but Germany has strict gun laws, and he made the decision to dump the live ammunition in a public trash can.
According to The Aviation Herald, a passenger had lost her ring and a flight attendant assisting in the search discovered the bullets in the trash can. The crew member notified the captain and he flushed them down the toilet, but eventually contacted the authorities and notified them of the situation.
After a successful landing, the passengers were safely removed and the plane was towed to a remote portion of the airport where firefighters emptied the waste tanks and recovered six bullets. The crews searched a second time and found the other four missing bullets.
The plane was cleared to return to the United States four hours after it landed in Munich.
United Airlines spokeswoman Karen May told The Associated Press, “He did incorrectly dispose of the ammunition, but it is likely that the pilot is not going to face any criminal charges. We are investigating. I can't give any details about his status other than he is still with us.”
