United.com, the website for United Airlines, went down this afternoon for about two hours, according to Twitter activity. The site returned around 4 p.m. Passengers were still able to check in for their flights via their smartphones or at airport kiosks.
The Chicago-based carrier is transitioning to a new website under the same domain name, so that could be one cause. The airline did say on its splash page that the site is down due to overwhelming demand and that it will be back online as soon as possible.
United is the world's second-largest airline. Last month, it was revealed that hackers with ties to China had breached United's websites and databases in May or June. There is no word yet if today's issue that pushed United.com offline is related to another cyber-attack.
We will update this as more information becomes available about why the site went down.
