Six people died Friday when a small plane crashed in Fredericksburg, Va., state police told the Associated Press.

After the plane reached the end of the runway at Shannon Airport, it pulled up again, crashed into trees and burst into flames, state police spokeswoman Corinne Geller wrote in an email to AP.

"It attempted to abort the landing and take off again," Sgt. F.L. Tyler of the Virginia State Police told CNN. "It then went off the south end of the runway and then landed in the tree line."

The bodies of the six victims, who all resided out of the state, will be sent to Richmond to be identified at the chief medical examiner's office, Geller wrote in the email to AP. Police will contact the next of kin before releasing their names.
