Vacationer Dies After Attempting Selfie on Cliff in Bali
A 21-year-old man died on the coast of popular resort destination Bali in Indonesia after attempting to take a selfie on the edge of a cliff.
According to the Guardian, Singaporean tourist Mohamed Aslam Shahul lost his balance on a six-foot cliff after being hit by a wave.
"He slipped and fell into the ocean. He apparently couldn't swim," said the local police chief in a statement.
Police discovered the man's body several feet below the surface. He was pronounced dead by doctors at the nearby Jungut Batu community health center. The police chief said his body was then transported to Sanglah Hospital.
Aslam was on holiday and celebrating with eight friends at the Sandy Bay Beach in Nusa Lembongan when the incident occurred.
Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that its embassy in Indonesia's capital city of Jakarta offered condolences to the man's family in addition to consular assistance. The spokesperson for the ministry also said the embassy has begun the process of returning his body to Singapore.
Unfortunately, this isn't the first selfie-related tragedy involving tourists. Last summer, a couple was killed in Portugal after falling off a cliff while attempting to take photos of themselves.
