Thousands of tourists in the Indonesian Islands are stranded temporarily as an erupting volcano and the ash it is spewing into the air have shut down three airports in the region.

According to The Associated Press, National Disaster Mitigation Agency Spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho is reporting Mount Rinjani on Lombok Island erupted Tuesday and shot ash and debris 11,480 feet into the air.

The ash in the air can cause devastation to an aircraft, and the conditions have forced the closures of Ngurah Rai International Airport on the island of Bali and Selaparang Airport in the city of Mataram. The erupting volcano also caused the closure of Blimbingsari Airport in Banyuwangi.

The Indonesian Ministry of Transportation canceled or delayed a total of 692 international and domestic flights between Tuesday and Thursday, and airlines were being instructed to avoid routes near the mountain.

A decision will be made on when to reopen the airports early Thursday.

Unfortunately, The AP is also reporting that passengers at Bali’s airport are complaining about the lack of information and were forced to sleep on benches inside terminals. On a more positive note, nearby towns and villages were not in danger from the volcanic eruption.

This isn’t the first volcano that has caused flight delays in recent months, as TravelPulse’s Patrick Clarke reported in September about cancellations in Japan after the country's largest active volcano erupted.
