The slingshot ride is an amusement park staple where passengers are hurled through the air while seated in a compartment attached to two bungee cords. But a pair of thrill seekers on such a ride in France got more than they bargained for when one of the cords snapped and sent them flying into a support pillar.
Oliver Gee of TheLocal.fr reported that a 24-year-old woman and her friend were strapped into a slingshot ride at Luna Park in Cap d'Agde, France, last week when the failure occurred.
As the cage the two passengers were seated in came down from the initial launch, one of the bungee cords snapped, sending the cage and the two park patrons careening back upwards and smashing them into one of the support towers.
The two passengers were stranded in the cage for almost an hour before firefighters were able to rescue them. While one passenger was not injured, the 24-year-old from Cher, France, suffered a broken leg during the accident.
The victim was treated on the scene by paramedics and taken to a local hospital.
Footage of the incident was posted on YouTube via WonderWorldWebTv:
Officials at Luna Park blamed the incident on a manufacturing defect in the elastic bungee cord, and the ride was closed to conduct a formal investigation into what happened.
For amusement park enthusiasts, this is the second terrifying incident over the last month with bungee cords snapping on slingshot rides. As TravelPulse’s Gabriel Zaldivar reported in July that a slingshot ride at Mt Olympus Theme Park & Water Park in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin, had one of the bungee cords snap just before the ride took off.
